The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) of NY-NJ-CT-NE celebrated India’s 78th Independence Day with a flag-hoisting ceremony at Times Square on August 15, 2024. Thousands gathered to honor the sacrifices made for India’s freedom, chanting "Vande Mataram" and "Jai Hind." The Indian Tricolor and the American Stars and Stripes flew side by side, symbolizing the bond between the world’s largest democracies.

The Independence Day celebration was generously supported by the Consulate of India in New York, with Hon. Consul General Mr. Binaya Pradhan and Deputy Consul General Dr. Varun Jeph welcoming dignitaries such as Shri Pabitra Margherita, Minister of State for External Affairs, Shamin Sharma from Mount Sinai, Mr. Amit Verma, Country Head of SBI US Operations and Mr. Prasanta Kumar Tripathy, CEO of State Bank of India, NY among others. Also present were Dr. Sudhir Parikh, Chairman of Parikh Worldwide Media; FIA Past President Mr. Anil Bansal; Editor of New India Abroad, Mr. Rajiv Bhambri; and Ms. New Jersey USA 2024, Ms. Jabili Kandula.

FIA President Dr. Avinash Gupta, along with his Executive Committee, FIA Trustees including Srujal Parikh, Kenny Desai, Alok Kumar, Saurin Parikh, and other community leaders, collaborated with a team of sponsors, media partners, and volunteers.

The celebrations included a powerful rendition of the Indian National Anthem, cultural performances by Shivaay Dance Academy, speeches from prominent community leaders, and a strong message of peace and unity.

In his address, Hon’ble CG Mr. Pradhan highlighted the growing influence of the Indian American community and the strength of the Indo-American relationship. Dr. Gupta emphasized the importance of secularism and unity in diversity. Professor Indrajit S. Saluja, Chief Editor of Indian Panorama, stated that as India progresses, the Indian American community should spotlight their achievements. He encouraged his Sikh brothers and individuals of all faiths to stand in solidarity and participate in the India Day Parade in New York on Sunday, August 18, 2024. Mr. Kenny Desai reflected on India's ideal of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," underscoring its secular nature.

As part of the festivities, the Empire State Building illuminated its iconic tower lights in the colors of the Indian flag—orange, white, and green—honoring the 78th annual India Day. The event featured cultural performances by Rudra Dance Academy and the rendition of patriotic songs, filling the air with a spirit of unity and pride.

Dan Rogoski, Vice President of Operations at the Empire State Building Observatory, addressed guests, emphasizing shared values of freedom and resilience. As a mark of honor, the Federation of Indian Associations presented a memento of the Konark Chakra to the Empire State Building, symbolizing its significance akin to that of the Konark Sun Temple in India. Special guest Neetu Chandra graced the ceremony and delivered a heartfelt speech, celebrating the contributions of the Indian community in the United States.

FIA President Dr. Avinash Gupta stated, "Today, we celebrate our freedom and remember those who sacrificed for it. The display of our flag and the light show at the Empire State Building are testaments to the strength of the Indian community in America."

The gathering served not only as a remembrance of the past but also as a celebration of shared values of freedom and resilience. As the sun set over the city, the illuminated colors of the Indian flag on the Empire State Building shone brightly, reminding everyone present of the values of liberty and justice for which the martyrs fought.
